Miles Teller in Whiplash

Local band Fire/works launch their new record, Shenanigans, in a setting appropriate for their moody movie-soundtrack aesthetic: the Cinémathèque Québécoise. 335 de Maisonneuve E. (Salle Claude-Jutra), 5:30 p.m., free

Multimedia artist Yunus Chkirate opens up his studio to host a vernissage of his works at Galerie Triad, with DJ Ron Hammelin and performance by Tristan Ginger. 3475 St-Laurent, 6 p.m., $5 donation for Maison Plein Coeur

Head downtown to Argo Bookshop for an evening with authors Marguerite Pigeon, a Vancouver-based former journalist whose new novel is based on her experience with a South American mining community, and Laurence Miall, a Montreal-based writer who’s penned his first novel, featuring an “unforgettable” antihero. 1915 Ste-Catherine W., 7 p.m., free

U.S. writer/director Damien Chazelle turned a lot of heads with Whiplash, a film about a music student whose life is overwhelmed by his unconventional drumming instructor. The film won the grand jury prize at Sundance this year, and screens tonight at the Phi Centre. (Click here for a chance to win tickets.) 407 St-Pierre, 7:30 p.m., $11.25
