Large majority of Albertans oppose separation

According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, a large majority of Albertans oppose separation from Canada.

Between 25% and 30% of Albertans support their province becoming its own country, depending on the federal election result. At least 70% of Albertans say they would vote no in a referendum.

The study also found that a majority of Canadians agree that Danielle Smith has betrayed Canada.

“So far, 2025 has been a year where Canadians have come together, after threats from American President Donald Trump to make Canada the 51^st state, and tariffs on Canadian goods entering the U.S. Former opposition leader and Reform Party founder Preston Manning was widely criticized after claiming that a vote for Carney and the Liberals represents a vote for Western secession and the breakup of Canada.”

The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from March 28 to 31, 2025 among a representative randomized sample of 2,131 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum.
