La Sra. Tomasa

Lineup highlights from the Mundial Montreal music festival, Nov. 19 to 22

Diversity is king at Mundial, which is putting 33 acts on stage for its 14th edition.

Mundial Montreal is back for its 14th edition, and the music festival’s 2024 lineup is as strong and diverse as ever. Mundial will have artists representing various styles originating in different parts of the globe descending upon our city for four days, from Nov. 19 to 22 — almost the exact timeframe as its sister festival M for Montreal. 33 artists from Canada and abroad will come here for Mundial, with more than 400 music industry delegates also attending.

While these artists perform in front of folks who can help elevate their careers and get them on tour, those watching will be treated to an array of sounds, cultures and styles they otherwise might not yet have discovered or embraced.

Here are some highlights from the 2024 Mundial Montreal lineup.

Bia Ferreira + Farah Siraj + Soleil Launière + ANNEGA

Those living around Ontario and Papineau will see this showcase happening right in their backyard. Cabaret Lion d’Or will play host to several acts on the first night of the festival, each from different corners of the globe. Mauritian Afropop singer ANNEGA, Brazilian singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Bia Ferreira, multi-talented Jordanian artist Farah Siraj (she’s been declared her country’s “musical ambassadress”) and Innu singer-meets-multidisciplinary performance artist Soleil Launière will all be on hand to kick the festival off. Cabaret Lion d’Or (1676 Ontario E.), Nov. 19, 9 p.m.

Salon Urbain at Place des Arts will host free shows (“Off Mundial”, more specifically) open to the public for three straight nights during Mundial this year, each held early in the evening as a 5 à 7. Wednesday the 20th will see psychedelic jazz rockers Les Passagers open the proceedings, followed by Mexican singer-songwriter NUNNE. Thursday will feature Haitian-Canadian songstress Magdala and globally inspired turbo folk artist Briga, with Friday showcasing Montreal-based Colombian artist Ramon Chicharron and le Winston Band, who blend their Québécois influences with Cajun zydeco music. Salon Urbain at Place des Arts (175 Ste-Catherine W.), Nov. 20-22, 5–7 p.m.

VÍÍK + Empanadas Ilegales + Laura Low + La Sra. Tomasa + Zale Seck + Les Rats d’Swompe

VÍÍK

Head over to la Sala Rossa for not one, not two, not three, but SIX acts on the same bill. In keeping with the distinctly Spanish flair of the building, there are several Spanish-language acts performing here — among them are psychedelic Vancouver salsa and cumbia quartet Empanadas Ilegales; Canary Islands singer-songwriter Laura Low; and Barcelona electronic-Latin fusion group La Sra. Tomasa. Conversely, we also have Franco-Ontarian five-piece les Rats d’Swompe, as well as Norwegian folk-rock singer VÍÍK and Senegalese rumba/Afrobeat artist Zale Seck. La Sala Rossa (4848 St-Laurent, 2nd floor), Nov. 21, 8:30 p.m.

Burnstick + Duane Andrews + Kelly Bado + Jeremy Ledbetter Trio

If you’re looking for an excuse to hang in the park during Mundial, look no further than this showcase, literally taking place at Parc La Fontaine — more specifically the afternoon event is being held at Robin des Bois. The show features Manitoba folk duo/IRL married couple Burnstick, the king of “Newfoundland swing” Duane Andrews, Toronto jazz outfit the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio and Winnipeg-via-Côte d’Ivoire songstress Kelly Bado. All distinctly Canadian, but no two of these acts are musically alike. Robin des Bois (3933 Parc La Fontaine), Nov. 22, 2 p.m.

Aluminé Guerrero (Highlights from the lineup for the 2024 Mundial Montreal music festival)

For the first time in its history, Mundial Montreal will be presenting late-night showcases under the banner of Rythmes Nocturnes. Partnering with Stingray, this showcase at la Sotterenea (the basement of la Sala Rossa) will put a spotlight on Afro-Colombian dance music (Madame Vacile), Latin-American folktronica (Aluminé Guerrero), Venezuelan-Canadian Latin pop (JACE Carrillo) and British-via-Ghana Afro-fusion (MAUVEY) as the wee hours of the morning pass by. La Sotterenea (4848 St-Laurent, basement), Nov. 22, 11:59 p.m.
