Cat Power

Today is the first day of outdoor art fair MTL en Arts on Ste-Catherine E., where you’ll find exhibitions from over 100 local artists, live painting, screenprinting and tattooing, film screenings and lots more in the Village’s festive summertime pedestrian zone. Ste-Catherine E. between Berri & Papineau, 11 a.m.–11 p.m., runs through July 3

Montreal’s Galerie Yves Laroche has undergone a move and a re-branding, with its new iteration as Galerie Matthew Namour launching in the Old Port with a vernissage and opening party tonight, featuring works by Ron English, Max Wyse, Gary Taxali, Miss Van, Alexis Diaz and lots more. 217 St-Laurent, 5–9 p.m., free

Poirier and Ghostbeard will be hosting the second edition of their outdoor summer jam Nord-East at the Tohu, relocated from the Sud-West location of previous years but with the same mandate: beats, beer, BBQ. Note that the event will be postponed in the event of more rain and thunder (which, at the time we posted this, looked pretty likely), so keep an event on the event page. 2345 Jarry E., 7–11 p.m., free entry

If you’ve seen The Conjuring 2 and The Neon Demon and you’re hungering for more big-screen horror (and lusting for blood), Dollar Cinema is screening a classic: Stanley’s Kubrick’s brilliant 1980 Stephen King adaptation, The Shining. 6900 Decarie Square, doors 7 p.m., screening 7:30 p.m., $10 online (see instructions here)/$15 at the door

Montreal indie-something musician Karneef is on the verge of releasing a new record, I’m Phoof, and if you missed the launch show a couple of weeks ago, maybe tonight is a good opportunity to catch him and check out Perfecto, for those of you who haven’t yet done so. Karneef is playing one of the Plateau bar/restaurant/venue’s recurring Souper Spectacle events — see the menu details here. 20 Duluth E., doors 7 p.m., dinner and show 8 p.m., $20 with a meal and glass of wine

The Jazz Fest is on! Tonight there are three worthwhile gigs to check out: indie singer-songwriter Cat Power plays Metropolis with opener Jesse Mac Cormack (59 Ste-Catherine E., 8:30 p.m., $35), mighty soul/funk ensemble Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings plays the big free festival-launch show on the main outdoor stage in Place des Festivals (Jeanne-Mance & de Maisonneuve W., 9:30–11 p.m., free, with an afterparty at le Bleury) and Lebanese rock band Mash’rou Leila plays Club Soda (1225 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., $32.25).
