Work by Jeffrey Veregge at Présence Autochtone
It’s been heating up out there, so if you’re looking for some relief don’t forget that many of Montreal’s art galleries and museums offer air conditioned comfort while you peruse their collections. There are plenty of new shows opening this week as well, so let’s have a look at some highlights.

On Thursday, the much-anticipated group show Woman x Women opens with a vernissage at Station 16 followed by an afterparty at Belmont with an all-woman lineup of DJs. Check out our interview with curator Mira Silvers from Sugar 4 Brains here, and don’t miss your chance to see some incredible works of art focussed on the female body from the perspective of women themselves. Some of the participating artists include famous activist artists Guerrilla Girls, New York street artist Gilf, plus locals Miss Me, Abdala Kaufman, Edith Lebeau, MC Baldassari, Heidi Teillefer, Lacey & Layla, Sandra Chevrier and many more. 3523 St-Laurent, Thursday, July 30, 5–9 p.m.

Also Thursday, Galerie Carte Blanche hosts an exhibition of Inuit stone carvings called TAKU, in conjunction with First Nations cultural festival Présence Autochtone. 1853 Amherst, Thursday, July 30, 6–9 p.m.
Speaking of Présence Autochtone, make sure to head to Place des Festivals over the weekend to check out the installations including a central teepee and longhouse, which will serve as venues for activities like film screenings, plus multimedia projections, street theatre, concerts and more. On the visual arts side, Native American illustrator and designer Jeffrey Veregge of the S’Klallam tribe in Washington state will be on hand with his Native Superhero Design series—reinterpretations of superhero design infused with the coastal Salish style. Place des Festivals, June 30–Aug. 2

Back to Thursday, you can also head to the Reginald J. P. Dawson Library in TMR (that mysterious fenced-in place with all the trees that’s west of Acadie Boulevard) for an exhibition of portraits by painter Hoda Ackad-Wenger depicting some of Montreal’s behind-the-scenes movers and shakers such as Céline Dion right hand man René Angelil, Just For Laughs founder Andy Nulman and concert promoter Rubin Fogel. Reginald 1967 Graham, Town of Mount Royal, Thursday, July 30, 5–8:30 p.m.
On Friday head to Villeray for the launch of a weekend-long program of activities under the banner Pop Up Collage, organized by Collectif Blanc at Espace Projet that will also spill over into the outdoor activity zone Place de Castelnau. In addition to an exhibition of collages by participating artists in the gallery space, there will also be workshops conducted by artists including Sophie Jodoin and Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf. 353 Villeray, Friday, July 31, 4–8 p.m. Activities continue through the weekend.

Get ready to party on Saturday, first at the vernissage for Shift, an exhibition of works by 2015 Mural Festival alumni Benny Wilding at Artgang Gallery followed by an afterparty punctuated by DJ sets from Toastdawg, Ephiks and Sagewondah. 6524 St-Hubert, Saturday, Aug. 1, vernissage 5–8 p.m., afterparty 9 p.m., free before 11 p.m., $5 after
The other big ticket art part of the night takes place at brand new Plateau venue Matahari Loft, which is hosting a retrossage for their closing exhibition of work by Queens-bred graff writer and street artist TurtleCaps and frequent collaborator Futur Lasor Now. Check the lineup for this jam: Tommy Kruise, Simahlak and Vincent Pryce provide the tunes while HoarKor live paints alongside a B-Boy dance demo. 1673 Mont-Royal E., Saturday, Aug. 1, 10 p.m., $5
