The Montreal Pet Show is back on today at the Olympic Stadium, featuring dogs, cats, exotic birds, reptiles, rabbits and rodents, contests, information sessions, animation and a dinosaur area for the kiddies. 4141 Pierre du Coubertin, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., $13/$9 (children under five free)

If you you prefer your companions inanimate and wrapped in plastic, check out the Montreal ToyCon, with over 50 dealer tables, Lego displays, costumed characters and more. Courtyard Marriott Montreal Airport (7000 Place Robert-Joncas, St-Laurent), 10 a.m.–4 p.m., $5 (children under five free)

For all those collectors less keen on packaged PVC representations of superheroes and more interested in all that glitters, the 53rd Annual Gem and Mineral Show is a must, with more than 100 dealers selling precious stones, fossils, jewelry. Place Bonaventure (800 de la Gauchetière St. W.), 10 a.m.–5 p.m., $7/$5 (children under 12 free)

Feeling especially patriotic? We’ve got just the event for you. A Canadian unity rally is planned for this afternoon. Bring your maple syrup and pet beavers. (No, not those beavers.)  Place du Canada (the park on Peel between, ironically, René-Lévesque and de la Gauchetière), 1 p.m.

French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz (La haine) will be in town to present his latest, Rebellion, at the Cinemania festival. Imperial Cinema (1432 Bleury), 4:45 p.m., $12.50

Marlene Dietrich classic The Blue Angel screens in 35mm at Cinéma du Parc. 3575 Parc, 4:45 and 9:15 p.m., $11.50

Coach House is launching several books as part of its Pilot series, as well as hosting a series of readings by Spencer Gordon, Sarah Pinder, Matthew Tierney and David McGimpsey. Sparrow (5322 St-Laurent), 7–10 p.m., free

Let the celestial shoegazer sound of San Francisco bands Tamaryn and Young Prisms seep into your pores. Il Motore (179 Jean-Talon W.), 8 p.m., $15

Catch local singer-songwriter Annabelle Chvostek as she launches her new record Rise. Petit Campus (57 Prince-Arthur E.), 8:30 p.m., $15/$25 (w/ CD)
