Montreal’s Grand Parc de l’Est to be 3.5 times larger than Mount Royal Park

The City of Montreal has announced the 700-hectare Grand Parc de l’Est, a regional park project 3.5 times larger than the surface area of ​​Mount Royal Park. Both Hydro-Québec (HQ) and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (CNC) are supporting the endeavour, another step in the city’s commitment to accelerate an ecological transition to mitigate the impact of the climate crisis.

The project aims to develop new points of contact with nature, protect endangered species in the area, develop recreational tourism initiatives and offer healthy and resilient living environments in a historically industrial sector.

The Grand Parc de l’Est will extend from Bonfoin Island in the east to 63rd Avenue in the west and the Rivière des Prairies in the north and St. Lawrence River in the south. Caroline Bourgeois, the VP of the city’s executive committee, who also’s responsible for large parks and eastern Montreal portfolios, said “Montreal is reaching a major milestone” in green-space preservation.

“I am very proud of this strong action that we are taking to protect local biodiversity, combat the fragmentation of green spaces, create buffer zones between businesses and residences and promote the health and well-being of the population.”
