Montreal forum on gun violence: Valérie Plante calls for ban on handguns, better border control

The city and the SPVM convened the ongoing forum to discuss public safety in Montreal.

The Montreal forum for the fight against armed violence is taking place today, convening representatives from the city (as well as provincial and federal levels of government), the police and community and youth organizations in order to discuss public safety issues. In a meeting with Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante called for a ban on handguns and better border patrol, stating the importance of uniting in the “fight against the proliferation of weapons.”

Mendicino will also be working alongside Quebec minister Chantal Rouleau and Geneviève Guilbault on the prevention of gun violence in the province.

Plante also posted about the importance of young people’s attendance at the forum, noting that youth have solutions to counter violence in Montreal.
