Well there won’t be any Stanley Cup parade in Montreal this year, but there’s still plenty to celebrate in Montreal’s arts scene this week, including a major fashion photography exhibit, several other exciting shows opening, plus the 16th edition of digital arts festival Elektra to keep you busy.

This year’s Elektra Festival is focused on sound art, with the theme Post-Audio. The festival begins today and runs through Sunday, May 17 with over 30 artists presenting works across over a dozen venues. Get a taste tonight, Wednesday, at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) with a performance of Nyloïd, a sound sculpture consisting of three six-metre flexible arms that resonate like giant guitar strings as they’re animated by the Swiss duo Cod.Act in a series of performances, the first of which will take place tonight with three daily shows daily from Thursday to Sunday. 185 Ste-Catherine W., Wednesday, May 13, 6:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., $14/$10 students.

LeRoyer Kai McCall-Wall-of-Sound
‘Wall of Sound’ by Kai McCall at Galerie LeRoyer (Downtown)

Also Wednesday, Galerie LeRoyer Downtown presents a series of portraiture by Kai McCall with an arresting mix of classical style with a modern edge: Think Marie Antoinette in a leather jacket. 2170 de la Montagne, Wednesday, May 14, 5–8 p.m.

Thursday, head to the McCord Museum for Horst: Photographer of Style, a major exhibit of works by the fashion photographer who shot nearly a hundred covers for Vogue spanning from the 1930’s to 1970’s, as well as portraits of influential figures like Chanel, Rita Hayworth and Salvador Dali. The exhibit consists of an extraordinary range of work, from black and white silver-gelatin prints of the 20’s and 30’s, to huge, full-colour glamour shots from the ‘50’s, to experimental surrealist still-lifes of plants and interiors, as well as dozens of vintage Vogue magazines with covers and inside spreads displayed. This travelling exhibit, organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, is making it’s only North American stop in Montreal and will on on display throughout the summer. BONUS: The exhibit is punctuated by a careful selection of vintage haute couture gowns from the houses of Chanel, Vionnet and Mainbocher, borrowed from the V&A’s vast collection of fashion artifacts. To see them in Montreal is a very special opportunity indeed. 690 Sherbrooke W., Thursday, May 14, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., with lecture from V&A curator Susanna Brown at 6 p.m., $20/$14 students.

'Poinsettia' by Peter Farmer at Galerie 203
‘Poinsettia’ by Peter Farmer at Galerie 203

Also Thursday, swing by the Old Port’s Galerie 203 for the vernissage of Peter Farmer’s The Hanging Gardens Collection. For this show, the artist has created abstract renderings of a variety of flowers, which will each be displayed with fresh examples of their inspirations. DJ André Valilla will be on hand at the vernissage. 203 Notre-Dame W., Thursday, May 14, 6 p.m.

Friday, check out Entre deux mondes, a group show with eight local artists including Dominique Desbiens, Marc-Frédéric Tuffelli and Mélany Fay. 250 Ste-Catherine E., Friday, May 15, 6 p.m.

On Saturday, check out another Elektra event at Skol featuring an afternoon of presentations, performances and discussions on the theme Sound Art, War and the Arab World. Mazen Kerbaj will present his 2006 work Starry Night, an improvised recorded duet of Kerbaj’s trumpet over bombs falling over Beirut. The program also included presentations by Samir Saul, Monia Abdallah and Serge Cardinal, before finishing with a performance by Jerusalem In My Heart. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #314, Saturday, May 16, 2–6:30 p.m.

While you’re in the Belgo Saturday, you can also check out opening shows by Justin Lalacette (Galerie Dominique Bouffard, #508), Alexander Pilis (Joyce Yahouda Gallery, #516) and Andrée-Anne Dupuis-Bourret and Francis Arguin at CIRCA art actuel (#444). 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, May 16, 2–6 p.m.
