The Smiths (not playing tonight, but the next best thing…)

The Cult MTL Halloween party is happening tonight at la Sala Rossa, featuring the Smiffs — a band (featuring members of Suuns and Pang Attack) that recreates the Smiths in their prime. Before, between and after the live sets, there’ll be more music to shake your tail feathers to, plus a ticket giveaway to the Johnny Marr show this month. This is going to be a sick! 4848 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., $8/$10 w/out costume

But before that, the Howl! arts collective’s first ever activist art fair is on today at Casa del Popolo. See more about that here. 4873 St-Laurent, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Montreal music critic, teacher and international development worker Erin C. MacLeod launches her new book, Visions of Zion: Ethiopians and Rastafari in the Search for the Promised Land, exploring the Rastafari movement in North Africa. See more about the book in our interview with MacLeod, here. 211 Bernard W., 7–9 p.m., free

If you’re in the mood for stand-up, comedian Mike Paterson is headlining at the Comedy Nest, with support from Tim Rabnett and Angelo the Amazing Food Magician. 2313 Ste-Catherine W., shows at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., $15

DFA dance-pop act the Juan Maclean, feat. singer Nancy Whang, plays the Rialto with openers L.A. Foster. 5723 Parc, 10 p.m., $20
