By and large, supergroups rarely match the sum of their parts, but Divine Fits, a new band featuring Dan Boeckner (ex-Wolf Parade, ex-Handsome Furs) and Spoon’s Britt Daniel somehow manage to sound exactly the way you’d think a collaboration between these two titans of indie rock would.

Most of the songs from their Montreal debut at Il Motore last Friday (which started late to ensure Osheaga attendees could make the trip) seemed like a slick melding of Spoon’s rhythm section with Boeckner’s twitchy classic-rocking chords. The result was at once familiar but oh so cool, and a step in a groovier direction for both. It would be simple to say that Divine Fits is like Wolf Parade, except with Spencer Krug swapped for Daniel as Boeckner’s songwriting foil, and it certainly felt that way at times given how Boeckner and Daniel shared lead vocal duties.

Although he was mum about the dissolution of Handsome Furs (the band consisted of just him and his wife) in Cult MTL‘s interview, one couldn’t help but make certain inferences based on Boeckner’s lyrics: “My love is real/until it stops,” and “good love is hard to find/you got lucky babe.” ■
