Santoor Rêverie

Santoor Rêverie

Saturday, Jun 14 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Get ready to dive deep into the tones of the santoor used by Pandit Satish Vyas, which reveal a shimmering grace of movement with a novelty and charm of their own. The emergence of the santoor on the classical concert scene as a full-fledged solo instrument is a matter of pure joy and has come to signify a historic phase in the annals of India’s centuries-old traditional music. Strange but true, the santoor had never been employed in Hindustani classical music, nor had it traveled outside the valley of Kashmir as late as till 1955, first being attributed only to Sufi music and known as the “Shatatantri Veena” (A lute of hundred strings), with name “Santoor” being attributed to the Persians. However, it was the late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma who popularized it by changing its shape and making it a soloistic concert instrument. His disciple, the renowned and senior-most Indian santoor player, Pandit Satish Vyas, will grace Quebec stages as the torchbearer of the grand legacy and genius of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His music is characterized by a deep emotional resonance and a profound understanding of ragas, which he interprets with both traditional purity and innovative flair. The gentle hammered strokes on the strings, that produce a multitude of delicate but lively tonal effects, will leave audiences mesmerized and spellbound. He is accompanied by Mukundraj Deo, one of the finest tabla players from India’s young generation, who has won praise, awards and accolades for his artistry. He has the distinction of having accompanied Maestros like Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Begum Parveen Sultana, Late Pt. C.R. Vyas, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Ronu Majumdar, etc. He has also been honoured by the President of India.
