All the Oscar nominations: Surprises, snubs, Quebec connections

This morning, bright and early, Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross announced the nominations for this year’s Oscars. After an unaired Golden Globes last month and an all-time low viewership in 2021, the Oscars has something to prove. So, how does this year’s lineup look? There are a lot of predictable front-runners, with The Power of the Dog (Jane Campion also becomes the first woman ever nominated twice in the Best Director category), Belfast and West Side Story raking up a large number of nominations.

There are some key surprises, though. Notably, there are nominations beyond the International Feature for The Worst Person in the World and Drive My Car (including a Best Picture nod), Don’t Look Up has stepped up as one of the most nominated films and Dune also dominated in more categories than originally predicted. Some people are disappointed that Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t get a Best Picture nod, but that was always going to be a long-shot.

Speaking of Dune, it managed to nab 10 nominations, including Best Picture. For other local connections, local producer Roger Frappier produced The Power of the Dog. NFB co-production Affairs of the Art was nominated for Best Animated Short Film. Unfortunately, the two Quebec shorts that made the short-list for Best Live Action Short Film, Les grandes claques and Frimas, did not make the cut.

The film industry has taken an unprecedented hit over the past two years. All over the world, cinemas have closed or operated at a limited capacity. More than ever, people have turned to streaming platforms to watch their favourite movies and TV shows. With mounting pressures about cultural relevancy, the Academy has expanded its membership to honour new films and reach new audiences. It’s unclear if this year’s Oscars will be able to overcome last year’s slump, but with the right host, it’s possible they’ll turn things around. If they can’t, maybe it’s worth considering that awards shows as a form is falling hopelessly into complete irrelevancy.
