Canada's most annoying politician on Canada's most annoying scandal

On Wednesday, Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre was asked to comment on the controversy surrounding the Quebec influencer party flight that took place on Dec. 30.

Rather than calling out the passengers for their behaviour, which flew in the face of public health guidelines and Sunwing Airlines’ own rules, Poilievre said (when asked about this specific point) that the airline should have to repay any government financial aid they’ve received in light of the pandemic. This is despite the fact that the flight in question was chartered and a pre-flight agreement promised that all passengers would comply with regulations. The Ottawa/Carleton MP also took the opportunity to bash the “elites” who make and then break the rules.

“Quite frankly, what is sickening is to see the wealthy elites here in Canada and around the world consistently breaking their own rules, telling everyday working class people to stay home, to lose their jobs, to live in poverty on $300 a week, to destroy their businesses, and yet it just seems that all the elites are able to get on planes and go to fancy places and enjoy wonderful vacations with no masks on, giving sloppy kisses to each other and pounding back bottle after bottle of high-priced champagne, laughing at what they consider to be the little people who are back home paying the price of this pandemic.
“We’ve seen how the millionaires and billionaires have gotten richer, they’ve gotten happier, they’ve had more fun than ever before and they broke all the rules that they’re imposing on everybody else and it’s about time that we stand up to this hypocrisy punish companies that facilitate it.”

Poilievre followed up his statement with some characteristically weak Trudeau-bashing on Twitter, making reference to the Prime Minister’s comments on the scandal yesterday.
