Mexican food used to be pretty scarce in Montreal, but a lot has changed over the past five years, hence the introduction of a Best Taco category. Is it surprising that the #1 spot was taken by the self-declared king, Jean Talon Market’s El Rey del Taco? And while it’s no surprise that Mile End’s Maïs and St-Henri’s food-truck heroes Grumman 78 are in the mix, it’s encouraging to see two more west end spots make the Top 5 — Tacos Tijuana is as close to Tijuana as you want to get, trust me. (Oh God, are we channelling Donald Trump? Does he eat tacos?) When it comes to new restaurants, our readers chose a diverse lot: Larry’s, the Lawrence-affiliated bistro in the old Café Sardine; low-cost/high-quality Little Italy casse croûte Chez Tousignant; McGill-adjacent Falafel Avenue; the upscale Montreal Plaza (a more pretentious Laurier BBQ); and the recently relocated Plateau joint Sushi Momo, which is all vegan.
