Meet Montreal’s new house of burlesque

The Wiggle Room, a new venue showcasing burlesque, cabaret and swanky red velvet nostalgia, opened its doors this week. Here’s what it looked like.

Class was the order of the evening as attentive doormen welcomed guests to opening night for new cabaret lounge the Wiggle Room. Red velvet curtains, bunny waitresses and a mustachioed bartender mixing cocktail classics like an alchemist greeted a swank crowd. The variety acts — burlesque, nouveau belly dance, stand-up and sketch — were a teaser for nights ahead of gin and giddiness. This pastiche of nostalgia recaptures Montreal’s old-school cool with a long silk glove and diamond (or cubic zirconia) as big as the Ritz. To maximize pleasure, check your disaffected attitude at the door and enjoy being powdered and pampered. ■

The Wiggle Room (3874 St-Laurent), open Tues–Sun, 7 p.m.–3 a.m.
