But what is a modern pow-wow really about? In the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, in the midst of yesterday’s grinding high-noon heat, it was evident: art, commerce and community.

But what is a modern pow-wow really about? In the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, in the midst of yesterday’s grinding high-noon heat, it was evident: art, commerce and community.

Following a series of local controversies, not least of which being federal budget cuts that threaten the survival of this very event, the pow-wow acted as a unifying balm.

Artisans and vendors sold their goods in a line of tents that wound around the field, with many hawking metric tonnes of deep-fried food, as well as strawberry juice and lemonade by the pail.

Drums and chanting heralded the dance competition and ceremony, which featured dozens of costumed dancers who emerged from all corners to display brilliant colours and craftsmanship. ■
