TOWN HALL – Extreme Inequality and Climate Breakdown

How bad is it and what the f**k can we do about it.

Climate Emergency Unit has partnered up with the Concordia Student Union, Coalition étudiante pour un virage environnemental et social, Sustainability Action Fund, and CUTV to organize a hybrid (in-person and virtual) town hall on the twin crises of economic inequalities and climate breakdown in a time where food prices are ???? while billionaires spend millions to drink champagne ???? in space.

A few days before the Trudeau government’s Throne Speech, this is a take on what’s at stake that you won’t want to miss.

Our moderator for the evening:

Bianca Mugyenyi: Executive Director of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute and former Co-Executive Director of The Leap. She is a Montreal-based activist and co-author of @Stop Signs: cars and capitalism on the road to economic, social and ecological decay.

Our speakers:

Linda McQuaig: Activist, a columnist for the Toronto Star, and a renowned author making the case for a more egalitarian distribution of wealth and power. She is the author of The Trouble with Billionaires, and, more recently, The Sport & Prey of Capitalists.

Marlene Hale: Known as Chef Maluh, Marlene is a Wet’suwet’en chef, educator, and climate justice activist. She has worked with several Indigenous organizations, promoting accessible healthy food and reconnection with nature and traditional culture heritage as well as the Wet’suwet’en land protection. She has just returned from a trip to British Columbia where she connected with the land defender and activists involved at the Fairy Creek blockade.

Seth Klein: Team Lead and Director of Strategy of the Climate Emergency Unit. He is the author of A Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency (published in 2020) and writes a regular column for the National Observer.

Paul Taylor: Executive Director of FoodShare Toronto and a lifelong anti-poverty activist. He also teaches at Simon Fraser University, is a regular political commentator on CTV and has written numerous op-eds and columns on various social issues.

Damon Matthews: Review Editor for the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He is Professor and Research Chair in Climate Science and Sustainability at Concordia University. His work focuses on quantifying the remaining carbon budget to assess equitable approaches to allocate emission allowances to individual countries.
