THE SOUL MOTIVATORS with Trio Bruxo & Jazz Amnesty Sound System

Friday, Nov 17 , 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

THE BEAT Network and Struk Events Present in association with Mundial Montreal present an electryfying evening of soul, funk, jazz and Brazilian vibes!

The Soul Motivators deliver a fresh take on a classic sound, blending 1970’s funk and soul, psychedelic jams and hip-hop breaks. They’ve shared stages with greats like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Lee Fields, Bernie Worrell and electrified crowds at major events such as the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, The PanAm Games, Sunfest, and Festival d’Ete. Their debut album, Free to Believe, was released on Do Right! Music in 2015, to national and international acclaim. 2017 saw the release of the Dirt on The Floor EP through Detroit’s Funk Night Records.

Their 2020 album Do The Damn Thing was the first recording to feature the power-house vocal stylings of Shahi Teruko – whose relentless fire and electrifying performances have been shaking up audiences since she joined the band in 2015. Having celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2022, the band returned with a brand new album Do It Together (Do Right! Music) and electrified crowds from Quebec to Vancouver on their recent cross-country tour.

Founded by three of Montreal’s most in-demand musicians, Trio Bruxo is inspired by the Brazilian “samba-jazz” piano trios of the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning their career by exploring the diversity of the Brazilian songbook, these compositions by pianist David Ryshpan are inspired by Brazilian multi-instrumentalists and composers Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti. As David recalls, “I named the group Trio Bruxo after reading an article on Hermeto, who is often referred to as a bruxo or sorcerer. His mystical presence truly imbues him with the magical aura of a wizard.” Taking the same folkloric roots that run deep through the music of Pascoal and Gismonti – specifically maracatú de baque virado from Recife, and forró from the greater Northeastern region – Ryshpan reconfigured these traditions with his extensive jazz training, an interest in classical compositional techniques, and mentorship from drummers Scott Kettner and John Hollenbeck.

Join us for the unforgettable night of electryfying music!
