ABOUT US

LIBRAIRIE MAKTABA is an independent bookstore and versatile cultural space located at 165 St-Paul W., in a heritage building in Montreal’s vibrant Old Port area. MAKTABA is a concept bookshop, carrying English-language books by diverse authors on a variety of subjects.  Our purpose is to cultivate and share knowledge, inspiration and imagination to the greater Montreal community, with a global virtual reach.

Within MAKTABA is also our in-house boutique — a garment collection based on ideas, writers and books. Our lifestyle section also carries finely selected merchandise by international friends and creative community including Shabab International, Ya Habibi Market and Hassan Hajjaj. MAKTABA will also host a variety of programming ranging from events, pop-ups, screenings, readings and workshops with our expansive community.

MAKTABA is warm, welcoming space steeped in culture, complete with freshly brewed tea and an inviting floor seating majlis area to enjoy a book and the views of the Old Port. Meaning both “office” and “library” in Arabic, MAKTABA is both a private and public space, with limited opening hours.

Finally, MAKTABA is the headquarters of our collective, We Are the Medium. Founded in 2013 by Sundus Abdul Hadi and Yassin “Narcy” Alsalman, WATM is a small, independent collective based in Montreal. Our work is intentional, intuitive and fiercely independent. With a birds eye view of industry, and suspended in diaspora, our intention is to give back what we have received from culture.
