Concert | Menace Ruine

Concert | Menace Ruine

Wednesday, Oct 30 , 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Always driven by the desire to create events and bring different practices into dialogue within our programming, the Cinémathèque québécoise is presenting a concert by apocalyptic drone folk band Menace Ruine.

Formed in the fall of 2006 in Montreal, Menace Ruine is the drone folk project of Geneviève Beaulieu and S. de la Moth. The duo has released seven albums on various labels such as Alien8 Recordings, Aurora Borealis, Profound Lore, and Sige Records. With their latest album, Nekyia, released in 2022, they decided to publish their music on their own label, Union Finale, which had mainly released music from their other projects (Preterite, Sévère, Quogne) and more recently, Geneviève’s first solo album, Augury.

Between 2006 and 2015, Menace Ruine regularly performed in Montreal, along the US East Coast, and toured Europe a few times, as well as the US West Coast. They also appeared at festivals like The Wire: Adventures in Modern Music (Chicago, 2009), Roadburn (Tilburg, 2011), and the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival (Switzerland, 2015).

After releasing their sixth album, Venus Armata (2014), the duo moved to the woods and stepped back from their musical life. They returned in 2022 with Nekyia, followed by the EP Ghost Heartbeats (2023). This fall, they will return to the stage after a 9-year hiatus for a rare performance at Cinémathèque québécoise, followed by another at Amplifest in Porto (Portugal) in November.
