As the city’s galleries continue to roll out their winter programming, this week is stacked with show openings and special events for you to chew on, so let’s get started, shall we?

First up, Wednesday sees vernissages both uptown and down. Two shows at Parisian Laundry open tonight, including Drop, Drop Slow Tears by Janet Werner, with slightly off-kilter portraits of anonymous individuals. 3550 St-Antoine W., Wednesday, Jan. 14, 6-9 p.m.

If Mile End is more your scene, head to le Dépanneur Café to see socially conscious street artist Swarm show recent works with a galactic reach at the vernissage for Boundless. 206 Bernard, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 7–9 p.m.

Thursday is a full day, with five different vernissages to choose from, but two of them are conveniently in the same building, at 5455 de Gaspé. Head to Diagonale in unit #110 first for the vernissage of Valerie Kolakis’s Chara, reflecting on the combinations of inputs that drive our development of space, with the Bauhaus-heavy build-up of 1950’s Athens as a backdrop. Take note: this vernissage doubles as the launch party for issue #83 of esse art + opinions. 5455 de Gaspé, #110, Thursday, Jan. 15, 7 p.m.

Later, head down the hall to Centre CLARK in #114 for a double vernissage including Valley of the Deer by Jillian McDonald. The exhibit, created while in residency in Scotland, involves video projections of Scottish landscapes inhabited by ghostly humans with animal heads. This is one exhibit you can take with you, via a smartphone app loaded with neighbourhood hotspots at which McDonald’s masked characters greet you through augmented reality. 5455 de Gaspé, #114, Thursday, Jan. 15, 8 p.m.

Friday sees three shows open in the Belgo including print-arts dedicated space Arprim’s installation of Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf’s exhibition, Catalogue des apocalypses ordinaires. For this show, the pop-culture inspired Phaneuf uses photocopies and other low-grade prints like advertising circulars to create large-scale collages that bleed off the walls and onto the floor of the gallery. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #426, Friday, Jan. 16, 5 p.m.

Upstairs at les Territoires, established artist Chih-Chien Wang stages the multidisciplinary exhibit A Helper, highlighting the connectedness forged when help is asked for and given. Simultaneously, Wang’s Mappe Program protégé, emerging artist Shanie Tomassini creates the exhibit Nature Molle, a process-oriented collection of works that points to the mutability of matter. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #527, Friday, Jan. 16, 6 p.m.

 

Still on Friday, at Mile End’s Articule you can optimize your potential to subvert contemporary modalities like the liberalizing powers of cultural capital by attending Desearch Repartment’s exhibition and workshop series, Corporate Creativity Workshops for Art, whose deliciously sarcastic promotional teaser is a work of art in itself. 262 Fairmount W., Friday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m.

Are you still with me? Because there are 10 vernissages going down on Saturday. Go refill your coffee. I’ll wait.

In the Old Port, Espace Cercle Carré presents Set Against the Ground by Andrée-Anne Carrier and Matthew Thomson, a show that inspires a second look at familiar household objects, as well as involving some EDIBLE sculptures that will serve as ephemeral, interactive installations. This means, you will eat them during the vernissage! 36 Queen, Saturday, Jan. 17, 6–9 p.m.

Downtown at the Belgo, five shows will open on Saturday, including a highlight at Galerie Laroche/Joncas with photographs from Lynne Cohen and Sylvie Readman in the exhibit Places. Don’t miss the chance to see the large-scale, evocative and somewhat humurous photographs of human environments from Cohen’s lifetime of work in a retrospective that’s especially poignant since sadly, the Montreal-based artist passed away last spring. These works are complemented perfectly by Readman’s journey through Montreal, following the footsteps of characters from a 1973 novel by Réjean Ducharme. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #410, Saturday, Jan. 17, 12–5 p.m.

 

Just above the tracks in Rosemont, Art Mûr hosts a vernissage on Saturday for several exhibitions mounted simultaneously; among them is Paysage financier by recent MFA grad François Raymond whose dioramas incorporate Canadian currency in ways that highlight issues of ownership and value within our political economy. 5826 St-Hubert, Saturday, Jan. 17, 3–5 p.m.
