inflation grocery stores greed-flation canadians canada

85% of Canadians agree that corruption has played a role in the rising costs of groceries, housing

Canadians largely agree that the people and businesses responsible for corruption are rarely brought to justice.

According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, 85% of Canadians believe that corruption has played a role in the rising costs of groceries, housing and other essential goods in their community.

Overall, 50% of Canadians agree that illegal or questionable activities have played “a big role” in the rising cost of essentials in Canada, while 35% agree that they’ve at least played “a small role.” Just 5% believe corruption has played no role at all in the high cost of housing, groceries and other essential goods.

Large majorities of Canadians across all party lines, income, education levels and age groups, and in all provinces agree that illegal or questionable activities have contributed to the rising cost of essentials.

“The last few years have been difficult for Canadians as inflation made essentials such as groceries and rent more expensive. Many say there is another culprit playing ‘a big role’ in raising the price of essential goods like groceries and housing: corruption. 85% of Canadians agree that corruption has had an impact on the rising cost of living. Canadians broadly agree (88%) that the people responsible for corruption are rarely brought to justice.”

A previous Angus Reid study also found that 4 in 5 Canadians believe grocery stores are taking advantage of inflation to increase their prices further than necessary.
