Canada to make contraceptives free

“Your right to choose shouldn’t depend on your income. So, we’re going to make contraceptives free in Canada.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a statement today about the plan to make contraceptives free in Canada. Evoking abortion rights (which was a topic of discussion in Ottawa this week), Trudeau prefaced this comment by saying, “Your right to choose shouldn’t depend on your income.”

Universal access to contraceptives for women is part of the first phase of the National Pharmacare Program.

The Canadian government previously moved to relieve the cost of women’s products by making tampons and pads free in all federally regulated buildings.
