Majorities of Americans support bans on handguns and assault rifles

Large majorities of Canadians and Americans believe their country should have stricter gun control regulations.

A study by Léger on gun control has found that majorities of Americans support bans on handguns and assault rifles.

73% of Americans support a ban on importing, buying or selling assault rifles, while 55% support the same for handguns.

Even larger majorities of Canadians support bans on handguns (78%) and assault rifles (87%).

Other findings:

  • 68% of Canadians and 88% of Americans think gun violence is a serious problem in their country.
  • 62% of Canadians and 64% of Americans think their country should have stricter gun control regulations.
