Quebec college of physicians recommends wearing masks due to COVID, RSV, flu spike

A government mandate is not expected but a rise in three respiratory illnesses is leading to an unsustainable situation in children’s hospitals.

Top doctors and experts in both Quebec and Ontario are recommending the wearing of masks in public places (particularly indoors) once again, due to spikes in three respiratory illnesses — namely COVID-19, RSV and the flu.

Le Collège des Médecins de Québec advised the public to wear masks in a message on Twitter, noting the unprecedented surge of kids coming in to children’s hospitals. CHU Sainte-Justine and Montreal Children’s Hospital are currently at 195% and 125% capacity, respectively, according to the Journal de Montréal.

“With the worrying rise in respiratory virus cases in children and the overflow of pediatric emergencies, the College of Physicians is again recommending the wearing of masks in public places in order to protect themselves and others.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged the public to wear masks in public on Sunday, but did not suggest that a mandate is imminent. The province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, is expected to echo this recommendation in a briefing today at 9 a.m.
