Jagmeet Singh Feb. 7 Ottawa convoy protest

Singh: This is no longer a protest, they want to overthrow the government, and it’s funded by the U.S.

“We need to investigate and stop the flow of foreign interference, particularly coming from the States.”

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has requested that an emergency house debate take place to address the federal response to the Ottawa convoy protest. Singh said that the ongoing occupation of the nation’s capital is no longer a protest but an attempt to overthrow the government, funded and influenced by foreign interference, from the U.S. in particular.

“The intent of this convoy is clear: they want to overthrow the government. And now there is clearly foreign interference. There are many examples of American politicians and other folks that are funding this direct action that is trying to undermine our democracy, replace elected officials with a committee made up of members — who knows how they are chosen?

“It is clear that this is not a protest. This is an act to try to overthrow the government. It is getting funded by foreign interference and we need to investigate and stop that, stop the flow of that foreign interference, particularly coming from the States.”

Organizers of the trucker convoy protest in Ottawa have stated their intention since the beginning to have parliament dissolved, and to occupy the city until all public health restrictions are dropped.

After nearly $10-million was raised for the protesters on GoFundMe, the crowd-funding platform denied the protest organizers most of the funds, a decision decried by the likes of Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Funds are now being raised to support the occupation of Ottawa on a U.S.-based Christian crowd-funding platform.

Singh’s proposed emergency house debate would also address the issue of getting out of the pandemic, solutions to housing problems and the increased house of living, all issues that Singh identified as problems that existed before the pandemic that have only gotten worse.
