Quebec gyms, bars, spas closed

No reopening date has been set for gyms, bars or spas in Quebec

Today’s reopening announcement left out some of the businesses and services that Quebecers are looking forward to the most.

The Quebec government has announced that restaurants and Espace pour la vie cultural spaces will be reopening on Jan. 31, while movie theatres, show venues and churches can plan to reopen on Feb. 7, with capacity restrictions and passport requirements. However, Quebec gyms, bars and spas remain closed indefinitely, with no projected date or calendar for reopening.

It’s also not clear whether alcohol can be served at show venues, or even what a show venue is. Some media outlets are reporting that arenas will be reopening on Feb. 7 — like the Bell Centre? With 500 people?

Will standing room be allowed at smaller venues, or does this green light for reopening apply to seated performance venues only? One local music venue, Turbo Haüs, noted on Twitter that they’re not designated a show venue, they’re a bar, therefore they won’t be permitted to reopen on Feb. 7.

Quebec gyms and bars (along with movie theatres, performance venues and casinos) have been closed since Dec. 20, 2021.
