When should the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) end?

3 in 5 Canadians want pandemic assistance programs to continue past Oct. 23.

According to a new study by Angus Reid, roughly two in five Canadians (41%) say that now is the time for assistance programs like the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) to end. Of those respondents, 29% have received the benefits themselves.

The Trudeau government is currently weighing its options, as many of the federal emergency benefits programs introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic are scheduled to end Oct. 23. The Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) specifically provides as much as $900 (after taxes withheld) every two weeks to Canadians who are directly affected by COVID-19 and are not entitled to Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

16% of Canadians say that the pandemic assistance programs should end by the end of the year, while two-thirds say the programs should not be extended past June 2022. 25% of respondents want to keep the benefits in place until the pandemic is determined to be over (25%) and the remaining 9% want them maintained for an additional year after the pandemic.

41% of Canadians say that now is the time for assistance programs like the Canada Recovery Benefit to end.
