1 in 2 Americans in the Northeastern United States is cheering for the Habs

40% of American hockey fans are cheering for the Montreal Canadiens.

A new Leger poll has taken a look at who Canadian and American hockey fans are cheering for in the Stanley Cup Finals this year: the Montreal Canadiens or the Tampa Bay Lightning. According to the results, 80% of hockey fans in Canada and 40% in the United States want the Montreal Canadiens to win. The highest level of support for the Habs in the U.S. is in the Northeastern states — New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island — with support from 1 in 2 Americans (49%). The lowest support for the Montreal Canadiens is of course in the South (33%), where Tampa Bay, Florida is.

The Western and the Northwestern United States had 39% and 42% support for the Habs, respectively.

The Montreal Canadiens are currently down 3-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Habs hope to reduce the lead tonight in Game 5 at the Amalie Arena, starting at 8 p.m.
