COVID-19 vaccine Montreal

Canada will begin domestic production of COVID-19 vaccine in Montreal

Justin Trudeau is expected to make the announcement this morning.

Canadian Press is reporting that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce the beginning of domestic production of COVID-19 vaccine in Montreal. This follows a $123-million investment in the Royalmount National Research Council facility, including the addition of a new building on site. Though it is unclear which vaccine will be produced there, Industry Minister Francois-Phillipe Champagne said that he has “received positive feedback from some leading vaccine manufacturers” about starting up Canada’s domestic production. The facility is not able to produce messenger RNA vaccines such as the ones produced by Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna, but can work with three vaccines currently being reviewed by Health Canada: AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson and Novavax.

Trudeau is holding a press conference at 11:15 a.m.
