Metal fans had their devil horns raised and heads banging on the east side of Parc Jean-Drapeau this past weekend ( Aug. 6 and 7) for Evenko’s seventh annual edition of Heavy Montreal. Here’s our metal team’s six top moments from the festival:

Candlemass

Candlemass

In a barely veiled jab at fellow co-headliner Disturbed’s crossover hit: “If you want to hear the sound of silence you know where to go. Here you hear the sound of doom.”

Napalm Death

Napalm Death

In a very welcome nod to the distinction between the violence-fetishizing metal of the moment, and the grindcore crust-punks who pioneered it — “Peace and love, peace and love, the only way forward. I see that some of you appear nonplussed. Well, as a matter of etiquette, we are Napalm Death.”

Suffocation

Suffocation

Guitar as fuck, Long Island as fuck, Terrence Hobbs as fuck.

Carcass

Carcass

Carcass is still just ripping as hell. (See our full Carcass review here.)

Skeletonwitch

Skeletonwitch

How deep beyond the permafrost? Ohhhhhh, THAT deep. ■
