Art this week

Now that summer’s drawing to a close, Montreal’s art spaces are starting to roll out their fall programming, making this week a pretty busy one with lots to do.

Today, Wednesday, is the first day of the World Press Photo Exhibition in the old port’s Bonsecours Market. This travelling exhibit brings together 150 prizewinning photographs from tens of thousands of submissions from photojournalists around the world. 325 de la Commune E., 10 a.m.–10 p.m., $13/$10 students.

Thursday, head to BBAM! Gallery to see an exhibit from A’shop’s Lacey Jane and Layla Folkmann, together known as Hot Sluts & Poutine. Whether painting murals in the streets or on canvas on the gallery wall, they specialize in portraiture with a sexy sense of humour. 3255 St-Jacques, Thursday, Aug. 27, 6 p.m.

Also on Thursday, the Darling Foundry will be celebrating their 13th anniversary with a cocktail party featuring art and musical performances, plus the opportunity to visit artist studios. DJs Shaydakiss, A-Rock, Hatchmatik and Agitarius will set the mood in the Place Publique terrasse area. 745 Ottawa, Thursday, Aug. 27, 5:30–11 p.m. $50 before 8 p.m., free after.

On Friday, Art Cible hosts a Pop-Up Gallery called Super Léger in the ruelle between Hôtel-de-Ville and Laval, in the block between Sherbrooke and Prince-Arthur. Participating artists include Sean Vadaru, Vicky Moe, Florence Jacob and more. Alley behind Hôtel-de-Ville at Prince-Arthur, Friday, Aug. 28, 5–7 p.m.

Also Friday check out a vernissage of works by Bolivian street artist Knorke Leaf called Yaku Yóllotl at L’Atelier-Galerie A.Piroir. 5333 Casgrain, #802, Friday, Aug. 28, 5:30 p.m.

The Belgo Building rumbles to life on Saturday with afternoon openings at CIRCA art actuel (#444) with Colin Lyons and Carole Baillargeon, Galerie Trois Points (#520) with Milutin Gubash and at Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain (PFOAC) (#216 & #221) with Roberto Pellegrinuzzi plus a group show. 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Aug. 29, 2–5 p.m.

In Park-Ex on Saturday, it’s this month’s edition of Centerfold, an outdoor show in a festive atmosphere with DJs and drinks where you can vote for your favourite 3 works and contributions from the night are allocated to the artists according to their vote count.
