Art this week

A number of Pride-related exhibitions and events are on the agenda this week in the arts scene.

LEVINE

Work by JJ Levine at Galerie Donald Browne

Montreal is in the middle of Pride Month, so naturally this week sees a number of arts events that are focused on the experiences of the LGBT community.

The Qouleur festival’s flagship exhibition, Rage & Love, is currently installed at Montréal, arts interculturels (MAI), so be sure to have a look while you can during the festival. Qouleur is centred around queer persons of colour, and the exhibition features work from artists like Võ Thiên Viêt, Emily Yee Clare, Dayna Danger and Candace Mooers. 3680 Jeanne-Mance, #103, to Aug. 21

Another Qouleur related event is happening tonight, Thursday—head to Articule for an artist talk by Chilean artist Anelys Wolf in conjunction with an exhibition of her work at Rats 9 called Rural Glamor, in which she will discuss her work and its look at the taboo queer gaze in conservative, rural Latin America—work that she’s been unable to show back home due to the subject matter. Artist talk at Articule, Thursday, Aug. 13, 7 p.m., in Spanish with English translation, free.

Also Thursday is a vernissage for the group show Raids, an exhibition of queer culture at Galerie Donald Browne, featuring work by JJ Levine, Paul Bureau, Suzy Lake, Christine Major and more. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #528, Thursday, Aug. 13, 5–9 p.m.

In Old Montreal tonight, you can see the first North American exhibition of work by Danish illustrator Mads Berg at l’Affichiste, whose retro-styled posters display a crisp, art-deco flavoured modernism. Berg has created posters for familiar brands like Orangina and Fjällräven Kånken. 471 St-François-Xavier, Thursday, Aug. 13, 6–9 p.m.

On Saturday, Galerie C.O.A hosts Maintenance, an exhibit by Miles Greenberg and Olya Krasavina who are the winners of the Possible Dimensions contest organized by Studio Béluga and Faux Cadres Canal. Montrealers will feel a particular affinity for the work of Russian-born fashion industry alum Krasavina, whose watercolour paintings humuorously depict construction zones and their ubiquitous orange cones. With the support from her contest win, she’ll be taking the construction theme to new heights for this show, installing a construction pylon sculpture especially for this exhibition. 6405 St-Laurent, Saturday, Aug. 15, 5–9 p.m.
