Art this week

Emerging artists, local fauna, Maliseet sculpture plus a new arts venue and a street art tour this week

LONG HAUL Jessica Mensch

Work by Jessica Mensch at the Long Haul Art Studios

It’s the height of summer in Montreal, which means that everywhere you look there’s another cool event to check out. While you’re hopping from one festival to the next, make a little time to check out what’s going on in the arts scene this week.

Work by Claire Burelli at POPOP Gallery
Work by Claire Burelli at POPOP Gallery

Tonight, Wednesday, head to the Belgo for a vernissage at POPOP Gallery of Disques durs et mémoires molles by Montreal photographer Claire Burelli, who’s showing work she produced during a residency at le Cabinet photography studio. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #442, Wednesday, July 15, 6:30 p.m.

There are a number of events to choose from Thursday, notably among them being a one-night only show of works by Jessica Mensch at the Long Haul Art Studios, where Jessica herself will deliver a DJ set from 8–9:30. Don’t miss out, because after Thursday’s event the trippy canvases will be taken to PEI for a show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. 450/454 Beaumont, Thursday, July 16, 7–10 p.m.

If you’re in the south end of town on Thursday, head to the Darling Foundry terrasse and Espace Publique for a performance night featuring artists Tina Carlisi and Janick Burn, followed by a series of short films—all produced by women—presented by GIV (Group Intervention Vidéo). 745 Ottawa, Thursday, July 16, 7 p.m.

Work by Shane Perley-Dutcher at the Canadian Guild of Crafts

Also Thursday, a new exhibit opens at the Canadian Guild of Crafts in conjunction with the upcoming First Nations cultural festival Présence Autochtone. In this exhibit, Maliseet silversmith and artist Shane Perley-Dutcher from the Tobique nation in New Brunswick presents Likcihikon Tisserand Weaver, a show of silver jewellery and sculpture. 1460B Sherbrooke W., Thursday, July 16, 5–7 p.m.

On Friday, stop in and say hi at Au Deuxième, a lower-main collective art space as the member artists host an open studio night featuring live painting by Waxhead plus demos from other member artists including Edwin Janzen, Sophie Aubry, Madeline Pippa Bartlett and more. 3655 St-Laurent, #206, Friday, July 17, 6:30 p.m.

Work by Sarah Thibault at Art Mûr

On Saturday head to Petite-Patrie’s Art Mûr for the opening of their annual summertime group show Fresh Paint / New Construction, featuring works by dozens of emerging artists representing 16 universities and art schools across the country. You can also check out works created by Sarah Thibault during a residency in smalltown Hantsport, Nova Scotia. Her sculptures blend attributes of ostentatiousness with the cozy comforts of home, pointing to the arbitrary power we assign to objects to make us feel secure. 5826 St-Hubert, Saturday, July 18, 3–5 p.m.

You can also head to the Belgo Saturday for two new shows at Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain (PFOAC) including Ripley Whiteside’s A Peaceable Kingdom, with ink on paper life-size drawings of Montreal fauna done with realistic beauty. Also on view will be the short video Oil! by Andreas Rutkauskas in which a sculpture resembling an oil rig loops through it’s mission of extracting oil from the earth. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #216, Saturday, July 18, 3–5:30 p.m.

If you’re looking for a good party this weekend, allow me to introduce you to a brand-new art space in town, Matahari—a non-profit collective arts venue launching this weekend with parties Friday and Saturday nights with visual art from prolific street artists and frequent collaborators TurtleCaps and Futur Lasor Now1673 Mont-Royal E., Friday and Saturday 9 p.m.–3 a.m.

Finally, on Sunday you can go for a stroll through the Mile End and learn about the street art that decorates that neighbourhood, on this weekend’s Street Art Walking Tour organized by @NickieMTL of If Walls Could Talk. Nickie will take you off the beaten path to see new and old works by artists like Miss Me, Stikki Peaches, Monk.E, Omen, Zola, Swarm and much more. Meeting at NE corner of Laurier & Esplanade, Sunday, July 19, 3 p.m., PWYC
