Art this week

This week’s arts scene involves absinthe, algorithms, augmented reality, and more

Marchesa Luisa Casati. Work by Steben Alexander at Galerie D

So, art lovers, get ready for another busy weekend in the galleries (and as we all know, the weekend starts on Thursday!) with plenty of vernissages, artist talks and other special events coming at you. Without further ado, here are some highlights we can’t wait to see.

Today, Thursday, is a full evening with five vernissages PLUS a couple of artist talks. Concordia’s Conversations in Contemporary Arts series hosts sculptor and educator Del Harrow for a lecture in the downtown Visual Arts building. 1395 René-Lévesque W., #VA-114, Thursday, Feb. 12, 6 p.m., free

Also on Thursday, Concordia’s Art Matters Festival hosts a conversation between Scorpion Dagger (aka James Kerr) and Harley Smart of Anteism Publishing. The pair have collaborated to turn Kerr’s hilarious Renaissance-stylef animated GIFs into a physical book employing the emerging technology of augmented reality. 1515 Ste-Catherine W., EV-6.720, Thursday, Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m., free

Work by Dego (Detlef Gotzen) at E. K. Voland Gallery
Work by Dego (Detlef Gotzen) at E. K. Voland Gallery

Two of the shows opening Thursday are just a short walk away from each other, so you could very easily visit both. First, head to E. K. Voland Art Gallery for Dego (Detlaf Gotzens)’s solo show of colourful abstract works, Tremors. 4710 St-Ambroise, #100, Thursday, Feb. 12, 5–8 p.m.

Afterwards, head a few blocks over to Rack Galerie for an exhibition of works by artist and graphic designer Samuel Charrois, a vernissage that promises to be quite a party with cocktails, a DJ and dancefloor. 3714 Notre-Dame W., Thursday, Feb. 12, 6 p.m.–12 a.m.

Spirit Board by X-RAY at Station 16
Spirit Board by X-RAY at Station 16

On Friday, have yourself a spooky Friday the 13th at Station 16, where X-RAY will be hosting a lighthearted candlelit séance to launch his limited edition spirit board (his take on the classic ouija game), each one hand-cut, silkscreened and autographed. 3523 St-Laurent, Friday, Feb. 13, 7 p.m.

Otherwise, head to Galerie D on Friday for Steben Alexander’s Ma muse m’amuse and help conjure the spirit of the legendary Marchesa Luisa Casati (18811957) with works including photographs and a short film presentation. You won’t want to miss this party, which will include live music from violinist Fran Alexander, snacks from El Zazium, beats by 256K and a sip of absinthe to make it all extra trippy. 1200 Amherst #102, Friday, Feb. 13, 5–8 p.m.

Work by Matthew Thomson at Art Mûr
Work by Matthew Thomson at Art Mûr

Back uptown on Friday, don’t miss the vernissage for Otherworldly at Art Mûr, featuring new works by Betino Assa and his imaginative societies that operate right under our noses, plus works by Matthew Thomson that will make you look a little differently at those everyday, mundane things that are discarded too easily. 5826 St-Hubert, Friday, Feb. 13, 5–8 p.m.

For Saturday, check out the Belgo’s Visual Voice Art Gallery for the vernissage of the German graphic design team Deskriptiv’s show, Generative Methods. The works are the results of a process-based approach using algorithms and patterns to create shapes digitally, and presented as 2D or 3D prints, or animations. The current presentation will focus on works on paper. 372 Ste-Catherine W. #421, Saturday, Feb. 14, 3–5:30 p.m.

While you’re in the Belgo, you could also take advantage of the last chance to see 119 m Above Sea Level at SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, where a special screening is planned for the film Le Semeur (The Sower) by Julie Perron, taking a look at the heritage seed cultivation project of Patrice Fortier in the Kamouraska valley, and what it can tell us about stewardship of the land and encouraging biodiversity. The film is presented in French with English subtitles. 372 Ste-Catherine W. #507, Saturday, Feb. 14, 2 p.m.
