Art this week

‘A Very Bad Dream’ by Eric Chan – at Galerie Youn

 

Like many other activities, things slow down a little in the Arts scene around this time of year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find something great to do every day of the week. While there are only a few vernissages taking place this week, there are lots of shows closing so now is the time to catch them while you can!

 

Tonight’s big event is the vernissage for Galerie Youn’s holiday group show Glow, which features new works by 30 emerging artists who were discovered this year across the international art fair circuit. On display will be a variety of formats from painting to sculpture to photography and installations, from artists like Eric Chan, Katherine Melançon and Matthew Grabelsky. A new window installation will be created for the exhibit by Commute Design Agency. 5226 St-Laurent, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 5–8 p.m.

 

On Wednesday, take advantage of a guided tour of the Biennale exhibits at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC), hosted by curator Mark Lanctôt. 185 Ste-Catherine W., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 7–8 p.m. Free with Biennale Passeport or regular MAC admission rates without.

 

Beginning Thursday, an exhibit of works by Jean Paul Riopelle will be on display at the Centre d’exposition Lethbridge inside the Boisé Library in Ville Saint-Laurent. The works chosen for this exhibition follow an animal theme, which became more prevalent in Riopelle’s work after 1965. 2727 Thimens, Thursday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m.

 

Also on Thursday, atelier b. will be hosting a vernissage and book launch of photography by Josni Bélanger. 5768 St-Laurent, Thursday, Dec. 18. 5–8 p.m.

 

For those of you who are practising artists, take note that YES Montreal is seeking submissions for their fifth annual YES Art Expo & Sale which will take place from March 19–21, 2015. Artists of all disciplines are invited to apply before the deadline of Jan. 3, 2015. Full details and the application form can be found here.
