Art this week

Guided tours, artist talks, NYC punk scene photos and more in the arts scene this week.

Richard Mosse_Madonna and Child

‘Madonna and Child’ by Richard Mosse

This week offers another slate of great shows opening plus some special events you won’t want to miss.

First up, tonight (Wednesday) a special presentation called Digging the Archives takes place at La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse where, as part of the feminist gallery’s 40th anniversary celebrations, curator Anne Golden will be screening a series of short films pulled from the archives going back as far as 1972. 4296 St-Laurent, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday is a big day with several shows opening — but I recommend starting with a free guided tour of the exhibits at DHC/ART with curator Cheryl Sim. The two shows (which were featured in our November print issue) include The Enclave by Richard Mosse and Surface Tension by Valérie Belin. Reserve your spot by emailing the gallery at info@dhc-art.org. 451 & 465 St-Jean, Thursday, 4 p.m.

Afterwards on Thursday, head to Nomad Nation to see Verona Sorensen’s new show, Urban Nomad: Door to Door, with large scale canvases of wintery abstract expressionism. 129 Van Horne, 5–7 p.m.

'Particule' by Marie-Josée Roy
‘Particule’ by Marie-Josée Roy

Also on Thursday you could check out Galerie LeRoyer Downtown to see the vernissage for Marie-Josée Roy’s show Le Chant Quantique. Roy’s work is based on metal, which she sculpts, paints and engraves in ways that balance human vulnerability with the strength of her medium. 2170 de la Montagne, Thursday, 5–8 p.m.

A major highlight goes down on Friday at BBAM! Gallery where photographer Paul Zone will be in the house to chat and sign copies of his new book of photos documenting the burgeoning punk scene in 1970’s New York. Large scale prints will be on display at the gallery including captures of luminaries such as Debbie Harry and the Ramones. 3255 St-Jacques, Friday 7–10 p.m.

Another big event happens on Friday, with Iranian-American artist Shirin Neshat giving a lecture at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as part of the programming offered by the Montreal Biennale. Neshat’s body of work has dealt with tensions between the genders in the Muslim Middle East in a way that emphasizes how feminism can thrive behind the veil, something some Western feminists tend to forget. 1380 Sherbrooke W., 7 p.m., free for Biennale passport holders, $5 without.

'Four' by Michael Toke
‘Four’ by Michael Toke

On Saturday, visit Galerie Youn for a reception for two shows, On Earth (Final) by Yuriko Kubota and When I Close My Eyes, I See Numbers by Michael Toke. Toke’s work, focussing on numbers, examines our sometimes irrational relationships with rational things. 5226 St-Laurent, Saturday, 2–5 p.m.
