The Sky Above, screening tonight at Parc’s Brazilian film festival

Join Montreal’s restaurateurs and bar owners first on the steps of Place des Arts and then on the walk to the Revenue Quebec building as they protest the retroactive provincial tax on booze. From the Facebook event: “The Quebec government is raising taxes on all alcohol sold in the province. To add insult to injury, they want to tax all current inventory, whether it was bought last week or 20 years ago. Restaurants will close, prices will go up and jobs will be lost if we stand idly by.” Place des Arts (175 Ste-Catherine W.), 2 p.m.

Concordia’s Cinema Politica screening series wraps up for 2012 with We Are Wisconsin, a doc on the popular uprising against a union-busting bill. 1455 de Maisonneuve W., Room H-110, 7 p.m.

The Sky Above is an unconventional docu-drama about life in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, its characters including a Hare Krishna/soccer fan and a transsexual prostitute/academic. It’s screening as part of the Brazilian film festival at Cinéma du Parc, in Portuguese with English subtitles. 3575 Parc, 9 p.m., $11.50

See some of the city’s most renowned experimental/improv musicians (Will Eizlini, Alexandre St-Onge, Sam Shalabi and Jason Sharp) gather tonight as  Hmmmmm, with Josh Zubot and Drainolith. Casa del Popolo (4873 St-Laurent), 9 p.m.
