Trailer

Multidisciplinary artist Robert Deschênes offers us a glimpse of his impressive body of work, sansui: six pictorial works that embrace landscape in a gust of poetic inspiration. Misty landscapes, imaginary mountains, and impassioned nature become for Deschênes “a metaphor for the body and spirit of being in symbiosis.”

Proposed as part of Paysages croisés / Horizons inédits, this group exhibition also brings together the recent works of Montreal-based visual artists Karine Demers, Lise Gagné and Géza Hermann. Paysages croisés reveals enigmatic, abstract landscapes and offers a natural order freed of its conventional representations. A lyrical view of landscape, biodiversity, and the environment; works that prompt reflection on our relationship to nature.

sansui: Explosions of Light on Canvas
Fascinated by the perspective and mood within a painting, Robert Deschênes creates expressionist works whose main themes revolve around the movement of water, which he sublimates with both subtlety and force. Deschênes affixes explosions of light onto the canvas, resembling fireworks and raging infernos.

For the last twenty years, influenced by Japanese culture of the Edo era, this alchemist of moods has drawn inspiration from Zenga, a style of calligraphy and painting created by Zen Buddhist monks in the 17th century.

Paysages croisés / Horizons inédits
Curated by Lucie Vachon and Jonathan Sardelis from Galerie Bernard, Paysages croisés / Horizons inédits presents a singular body of work in the form of painting, drawing, photography, and paper constructions—works that enchant by their romanticism, luminousness, and unbridled whimsical spirit.
