All praises due! This full-length collab between one of 2016’s most compelling hip hop/soul talents — Oxnard, CA’s Anderson .Paak — and Philly producer Knxwledge follows their debut EP (Link Up & Suede) with the grooves and grit we’ve come to anticipate from both artists. Yes Lawd! is a woozy prayer for the souls of well-meaning hedonists, a love record for disenfranchised romantics set to the swing of dusty, sweeping samples that back .Paak’s convincing croon whether he’s beckoning higher blessings or asking forgiveness for future transgressions. In a year heavy with big statements in recorded hip hop music — including .Paak’s solo Malibu — NxWorries come in at the back end with an LP worthy of its 2016 contemporaries and then some. 8.5/10 Trial Track: “Best One” (Darcy MacDonald)
