Quebec sugar shacks

Get your cabane à sucre eats in the city

Your seasonal maple fix can be had at Montreal restaurants, markets & bars, PLUS a wintertime food truck that may be worth a little drive.

Cabane a sucre

Elements of a tasteful, fairly authentic cabane à sucre feast

In Montreal, the arrival of springtime usually means playoff hockey is around the corner. This year, that may not be the case, but there’s another sweet tradition that Montrealers can count on every year: the cabane à sucre.

If you’re in the city and can’t get out to an authentic sugar shack to feast on eggs, ham, tire (chilled maple syrup on a stick) and oreilles de crisse, no worries. Here’s a list of cabane à sucre en ville events over the next month:

Parcours gourmand d’érable @ Marché Atwater

Described as a “Maple Party,” this event sounds well worth the $5 cover charge, which includes a cocktail and access to all the vendors showing off their maple goodies. Available will be such delicacies as maple beer from Fromagerie Atwater and a maple rabbit terrine and mousse from Terrines et Pâtés. The event is on March 18, from 4-7 pm.

Brunch Festif à l’Érable @ Le Richmond

If you’re looking to go the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 20, why not grab some brunch from Le Richmond beforehand? Starting at 11 a.m., the restaurant’s monthly festive brunch is maple-themed, and will have maple drinks, outdoor activities and a DJ to start the day off on the right note. If you can’t make it this weekend, Le Richmond will be holding a similar maple brunch next weekend, on March 27. An RSVP is required.

Cabane à sucre urbaine @ Bar Davidson

This is a full buffet style meal for a flat fee of $25. The menu’s got plenty of options, including a pea soup, ham omelette and maple syrup sausage dish. Also included is Bar Davidson‘s house beer. With music and a festive atmosphere, this one — happening on April 3 — should be fun. Tickets are available in advance only — find more details about how to do that here.

Cabane à sucre urbaine @ Maison du développement durable

Maison du développement durable and Equiterre have organized a cabane à sucre event that offers a way to learn about the risks of global climate change while enjoying deliciously sustainable maple treats. There will be a live demonstration of maple syrup production, with the option to buy some of the candy made in front of your eyes. The event itself is free, but you do have to register ahead of time.

Au Pied de Cochon cabane à sucre

Cabane à sucre @ Camion Au Pied de Cochon

Montreal restaurant Au Pied de Cochon holds one of the most popular cabane à sucre events each season. So popular, in fact, that they’re already all booked up for this year! If you weren’t thoughtful enough to land a reservation for 2016, you can still get some delicious maple food off their menu from their food truck, which will be serving stuff off the seasonal menu every weekend until May 8. But you still have to drive to the shack at St-Benoit de Mirabel to get it. See directions here
