Japanese design, intoxicating black & white photos and artist talks galore are on our radar as must-sees in the arts scene this week.

The art world is offering a number of eveCnts and openings this week to keep you busy, including several vernissages to choose from between tonight and Friday, plus lots of  great opportunities to hear artists discussing their works.

If you’re still looking for something fresh to start your evening tonight, head down to the Centre de design de l’UQAM (1440 Sanguinet) at 6 p.m. for the vernissage for L’objet japonais – A panorama of contemporary design in Japan.

An artist talk will take place on Thursday at DHC/ART (465 St-Jean) at 5:30 p.m., featuring Charles Stankievech with a lecture titled Piercing the Screen of the Vegetable Kingdom: Remarks on Infared. The talk is in conjunction with the ongoing exhibit of Richard Mosse’s The Enclave which was produced using infared photography.

A major highlight on Thursday will be a retrospective of more than 60 photographs by Ralph Gibson at Galerie Samuel Lallouz (1455 Sherbrooke W.). The artist’s oeuvre of black and white photos show his eye for shape and line, whether found in architecture, the human body, or everyday ephemera. The photographer will be present at the vernissage, from 5 p.m.

Also on Thursday, Montreal illustrator Shauna Eve will hold a one-night only exhibit of recent drawings and paintings called La Petite Mort at Espace POP (5587 Parc), from 6 p.m.

Two vernissages take place inside the Belgo (372 Ste-Catherine W.) on Friday, including Vacant Living, a series of installations by Dong-Kyoon Nam at Centre des Arts actuels Skol (#314 from 5:30 p.m.) that blur the lines between everyday household objects and gallery-supported design, and two exhibits at Les Territoires (#527 from 6:30 p.m.) – À L’Ombre de Mouches by Julie Escoffier and Peu N’Est Pas Rien by Caroline Mauxion.

On Saturday, head back to the Belgo to see new work by Luke Painter in a show called Hither and Thither at Galerie Trois Points (372 Ste-Catherine W. #520, from 3 p.m.). Painter’s highly detailed work is filled with intricate patterns drawn from a deep well of references and inspirations. Also opening in the same space will be a group show of sculptures called Cas de Figure.

Throughout the week, you can also take advantage of a flurry of programming related to La Biennale, including several artist talks by luminaries such as Lawrence Weiner, Thomas Hirschhorn, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Pablo Sigg. Check out the full programming schedule for details.
