Honour Indigenous Children. Denounce Genocide. Demand Justice.

Thursday, Jul 1 , 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A vigil and march initiated by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal

This Thursday, July 1, we are coming together in Montreal to honour the 751 children whose unmarked graves were located in Cowessess First Nation, Saskatchewan. The graves were identified near the former Marieval Indian Residential School, a school that was administered from 1901 to 1979 by members of the Sœurs de Saint-Joseph, a religious congregation based in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec.

We are gathering community members and allies to mourn together and demand justice. Speakers, drumming and performances will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a march to Place du Canada.

This is a family-friendly event. We will be there rain or shine and encourage you to wear orange and bring signs/banners with thoughtful messages — and bring your drums!

We will be respecting COVID-19 green zone guidelines, which means wearing masks and practicing social distancing during demonstrations outdoors.

There will also be a convoy towards Montreal from Kanehsatake to commemorate those lost to the residential schools; we are planning our protest to occur after the arrival of the convoy in Montreal, to allow people to participate in both events.
