versailles was the place to be in 18th century france, but the king’s lavish palace, strategically located outside of paris to avoid the filth of europe’s greatest city, was decidedly not within reach for the people. that didn’t stop parisians in the 18th century from trying to imitate their legendary king. like we do today, many middle-class parisians were always scrambling to stay on top of the latest trends set by their favourite celebrity and tastemaker. indeed, louis xiv (catchy name!) had the finest palace, the finest musicians, and he threw the finest balls in europe. because of the public’s widespread obsession with the king and his fashion choices, a vast repertoire of chamber music was published in imitation of the music happening at versailles, and amateur artisans who sought to emulate the grandeur of the palace would play the music in their homes with friends. french music is all about refined elegance, and this program is full to the brim with little treats of splendour and spectacle, just for you.

the concert on 22 feb. will be followed by a “jam baroque,” open to anyone with an instrument or a voice!
