Grouyan Gombo with Vaillant Larock (Antoine Larocque from the Winston Band)

Friday, Apr 12 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

There is a three-decade long history of Cajun and Zydeco bands emerging out of Quebec and Ontario, which includes Montreal’s Grouyan Gombo, a trad Cajun band founded by accordionist Harlan Johnson. The music has brought musicians, dancers and fans together from Louisiana to Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and beyond. Canadian Cajun-inspired bands continue to evolve spreading the good word of infectious two-steps and waltzes all over the country. For this special event at Montreal’s Casa del Popolo, the audience will experience a 5-piece band featuring Quebec and Ontario musicians and longtime Cajun music aficionados, Harlan Johnson on the accordion, Guillaume Jabbour (Jabbour) on the guitar, Carl Rufh (Durham County Poets) on the bass, as well as Michael Jerome Browne and Antoine Larocque (Le Winston Band) on twin fiddles. The members of this collective have steeped themselves in Cajun/Creole music through studies with such past and present Louisiana masters, such as Boisec Ardoin, Delton Broussard, Sam Broussard, and Steve Riley. The band features a sound that is direct, warm and groove focused, bridging the traditional and contemporary strains of a rich genre. Louisiana Cajun culture has been recognized for its ability to resist, persist and celebrate life despite adversity. We invite you to join Grouyan Gombo in experiencing a rich and evolving musical language. With Antoine Larocque, aka Vaillant Larock, presenting his brand new solo act to open up the show, this is not to be missed. Allons danser!
