Passovah Productions’ Noah Bick takes on DJ duties at Nouveau Palais once again, bringing his recurring Bick and Bites event to the brunch crowd. 281 Bernard W., 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Demonstrations are being held across the country today to protest Bill C-51, the feds’ so-called anti-terrorism act (read about the sweeping changes to Canadian laws that the bill proposes here). The LP Tango Project, featuring a slate of award-winning musicians from across the country, will perform at the Sofitel at an event that includes an exhibit of work by several local artists, plus live painting by Kevin Jenne and Alex Produkt. 1155 Sherbrooke, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., $25

The Cinémathèque Québécoise screens the debut film by horror/sci-fi master John Carpenter, Dark Star, as part of its ongoing series about special effects. The 1974 film’s charming homespun special effects were designed by Dan O’Bannion, who later went on to write Alien and direct The Return of the Living Dead. 335 de Maisonneuve E., 7 p.m., $10/$9 for students & seniors

Local bands the Damn Truth, Elephant Stone, Diamond Bones, Seb Black and We Are Monroe play the fifth anniversary celebration for CHOM 97.7 FM radio show Montreal Rocks, hosted by Jay Walker — see our interview with him here. All proceeds go to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Théâtre Fairmount (5240 Parc), 8 p.m., $10/$15

Nu-disco/funk/house artist Fonkyson — a Frenchman living in Montreal, signed to local label Lisbon Lux — launches his third EP (Horny) at Felix, the St-Hubert Plaza venue formerly known as CFC. Opening the party are Gold Cheng and VICTØ.R. 6388 St-Hubert, 10 p.m., $7 before midnight/$9
