Yesterday’s fresh snowfall makes for the perfect conditions to go tobogganing on Mount Royal, and you’ll be in good company at today’s Toboggan Derby. Enthusiastic and highly creative sledders have prepped by making their own art sleds, so come out and cheer for your favourites, and BYO sled to join in on the fun. Corner Parc and Mont-Royal, 2–5 p.m., free

Mile End’s Galerie Youn hosts a vernissage for its new show of adorable animal portraiture with a twist — the delicate figurines gracing the canvases of Megan Ellen MacDonald will be cast in reverent lighting usually reserved for nobility, and the four-legged stars of Michael Caines’s Mammalia collection wink at us from perfectly staged selfies. 5226 St-Laurent, 2–5 p.m., free

Insulate yourself and check out today’s MUTEK edition of Hivernale out by the Big O, featuring DJs Patti Schmidt (yes, the former host of CBC’s Brave New Waves & 5à6, currently programming for MUTEK and doing this on the side) and Cyan, as well as live sets by Magnanime and Stefny Winter. Bring your skates if you’re into that, and some cash for food (c/o Buvette Chez Simone’s Frederic Bourgault) and drink. 4115 Pierre-de-Coubertin, 4 p.m., free entry

Nine-piece Israeli reggae band Zvuloon Dub System brings their “one world, one love, one music” sound and message to the Rialto. Get a feel for the band with this video of their performance from Jamaica’s Sumfest. 5723 Parc, 8 p.m., $40 for first 10 rows/$25/$10 for students

This year’s edition of the FRO Festival kicks off with legendary Dead Prez rapper M-1, who will speak and perform at the Grande Bibliothèque with local support from Roen Higgins, Emrical, Fredy V of Kalmunity, Meryem Saci of Nomadic Massive and live painting by Ma’liCiouZ. Check out our preview of this year’s FRO Festival programming here. 475 de Maisonneuve E., 8 p.m., $12

Montreal beatmaker and DJ Shash’U launches his EP Thru Da Night with a free banger at le Belmont, where he’ll be joined by Karim Ouellet & King Abid, Simahlak, Jerms, Radio Radio, Koriass, Rymz and more. Check out our chat with the man of the hour here. 4483 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., free
