This week’s top sonic beat-downs

Are you feeling cabin fever yet? Here’s where to get out and get your dose of heavy music.

facebook (379x464)Now that Jack Frost has nipped at our Hydro bills, cabin fever will inevitably start creeping in around the tail end of January. If the couch is starting to feel like a trap, there are plenty of shows in town to get you out the door.

Thursday: A glorious night of industrial beat-down is guaranteed when Pelvic Floor play at Casa with Perverted Justice, Flesh Entry and la Naegleria. To make your trip down to Casa doubly good is Xarah Dion and DJ Personne’s lush synthwave and prodding post-punk on the bar side of Casa with a regular night they’ve named Sérénade Obsolète. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $5 (DJ night is free)

Every third Thursday of the month, a night of live music flying under the moniker of Disparat will be happening at Playhouse. The first edition promises noise, experimental and drone with Noise Cobra and Echo Beach. 5656 Parc, 10 p.m., $5

Friday: For a night of crushing heaviosity, catch the Mad Parish offshoot band Cromagnum with Monobrow, Raven Black and Dirtcake, at Piranha. 680 Ste-Catherine W., 8:30 p.m., $10/$12

Hardcore faves Hank Wood and the Hammerheads will return to our frosty burg with the d-beat of Ursula, Mueco and Parasytes, who should have their freshly recorded demo in tow. Katacombes (1635 St-Laurent), 9:30 p.m., $10

How they grow up so fast. CKUT will be blowing out the candles on art’s birthday cake at the world famous Brasserie Beaubien. You can help celebrate (and raise funds for the radio station) by checking out CKUT’s Circuit Workshop, Wiklow, Skintone, Saxsyndrum and DJ Rehtse Ttelps keeping things spinning. 73 Beaubien E., 10 p.m., $7-$10

A guaranteed great night of local talent is sure to be had at Casa with Public Drama, Pale Lips, Chunky Mona and the sheer rawk power of Nobros. 4873 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., $

Sunday: Fans of the Barr Brothers are going to want to try and squeeze into the tiny confines of Snack ‘n Blues to catch Fel-Barr, with Michael Felber and Meg Clinton. Better get here early but stay late to hear some prog gems and truly fugged up videos from the one and only, DJ Coco. 5260 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

Finally, my big pick of the week would go to the sublime and innocent lo-fi jams of legendary Scottish duo the Vaselines with Amanda X at le Ritz. Hell, if they were good enough for Kurt, they’re good enough for you. Check out Cult MTL’s interview with the Vaselines here. 179 Jean-Talon W., 9:30 p.m., $18/$20
