Mark Carney Pierre Poilievre Trump trade war

Majority of Canadians say Mark Carney deserves credit for Canada avoiding new U.S. tariffs

“It has been evident in the data for weeks that Canadians prefer Mark Carney to Pierre Poilievre when it comes to Donald Trump and U.S. tariff negotiations.”

According to a new study by the Angus Reid Institute, a majority of Canadians agree that Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney deserves credit for Canada avoiding new tariffs from the United States. A plurality of Canadians also cite Carney as the most influential factor in Canada avoiding additional tariffs.

54% of Canadians say that Carney deserves credit for Canada avoiding new tariffs. Conversely, 30% say that Carney doesn’t deserve any credit, including 69% of Conservative voters.

“It has been evident in the data for weeks that Canadians prefer Mark Carney and the Liberals to Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives when it comes to Donald Trump and U.S. tariff negotiations. Carney said on Wednesday — just one week after the historic economic upheaval precipitated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s global tariffs — that these policies are ‘putting people’s livelihoods in jeopardy’ in Canada. On the same day, Trump reportedly paused some tariffs for 90 days, while increasing the levy on China to more than 100%, continuing to treat the global economy as a proverbial yo-yo.”
